** History & Advisory:

On December 3, 2007 the Marco Island Blog issued to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection ("FDEP") a Florida Statute 119 request to produce all emails related to Marco Island. The purpose of the request was simple: ascertain why there has not been (and it appears that there never will be) prosecution for asbestos dumping, pumping of contaminated effluent into the waterways and the emission of the toxic hydrogen sulfide gas into the environment - all violations for federal and state laws.

On September 27, 2008 - after nearly 10 months since the original request - the FDEP produced approximately 7,500 emails with their attachments. Unfortunately, these are NOT all of the emails that exist, and of those produced, some are missing their attachments. Repeated requests to the FDEP that it produce ALL of the emails, and delineate the rationale for censoring those emails/attachments that were not produced - as required by law - have been ignored.

Hence, if your search does not turn up an email that you know to exist - don't be surprised.

Despite not having all of the emails or the reason for the censoring, the emails that have been produced - and now available here for the first time to the citizenry - are quite revealing.
